MON Nov 2: Team New York Gay Games Registration Event

Gay Games Cologne Representatives Arrive in New York from Germany

Team New York, New York’s LGBT sports groups, and visiting representatives from Gay Games Cologne will co-host a special Gay Games 2010 registration event on Monday, November 2, from 6 pm to 9 pm at Gym Sportsbar, 167 Eighth Avenue, in NYC. New York area athletes will be able to register on site, saving 10 Euros on their registration fee, learn more about the 2010 Gay Games, ask questions about Team New York, and meet Cologne organizers. All are invited to attend and the event is free.

New York is one of 20 US and Canadian cities being visited by representatives of Cologne. Annette Wachter, the CEO of Games Cologne, will be in New York along with Stephan Collet, a member of Games Cologne’s organizing committee.

Gay Games VIII Cologne 2010

Gay Games VIII Cologne 2010 will take place July 31 to August 7, 2010 and will open with an inspiring opening ceremony at RheinEnergie Stadium in front of up to 48,000 people. With 34 sports and five cultural events, Cologne’s Gay Games is expected to draw 10,000 to 12,000 participants. Participation is open to all, regardless of ability or sexual orientation, and no pre-qualifications are necessary. Full information, including registration and travel details, are available at www.games-cologne.com.

About the Gay Games

The Gay Games is a quadrennial sports and cultural festival founded in 1982 by Dr. Tom Waddell, an Olympic decathlete. Celebrated every four years, the Gay Games motto is “Participation, Inclusion and Personal Best.” Drawing up to 14,000 participants – more than the Olympic Games – previous Gay Games have been held in San Francisco (1982, 1986), Vancouver (1990), New York (1994), Amsterdam (1998), Sydney (2002), and Chicago (2006). Following the 2010 Gay Games in Cologne, Cleveland will host Gay Games IX in 2014.

“Gay Games”, “Federation of Gay Games”, the interlocking circles device, and the phrase “Participation,

Inclusion and Personal Best” are trademarks of the Federation of Gay Games, Inc. Trade marks are registered in the USA, Canada, Benelux, the UK, Germany and Australia.

BASKETBALL BINGO!!  WEDS, NOV 4, 2009

BASKETBALL BINGO!!  BOYS & GIRLS WELCOME.

This is a HUGE fundraiser for the NYC Gay Basketball League.
RSVP here: http://www.evite.com/app/publicUrl/ZQDGYQIPHRPYCAKYRNKS/nycgbl

We could potentially raise $1500 at this event!!  But we need YOUR HELP!  And you will help just by being there!

Here's how it works.  You and your friends show up at Pieces Bar at 8pm on Weds, November 4th.  A few members of the Basketball League sell Bingo cards for $1 each (cheap!)   Every single dollar raised goes right to the NYC Gay Basketball League!

There are four rounds of bingo.  The winners receive gift bags of fun items (possibly including adult film DVDs, prophylactics, lubricants, t-shirts, books, calendars, odds'n'ends...)

This is a fundraiser.  We need your help! :)  Men & Women are invited to this very welcoming bar.  It will be a lot of fun if we have a big turn-out.  Maybe we'll watch the boys vs. the girls to see who wins more bingo rounds!

SURVEY: Homophobia and Transphobia in Sports

Dear Athletes,

GLAD, the New England-wide legal organization that won marriage cases in Mass. and Connecticut and is now suing to overturn DOMA, is setting its sights on challenging homophobia and transphobia in sports. To determine how it can best do that, GLAD is researching the ways in which anti-gay and anti-transgender attitudes affect LGBT athletes and coaches. Its first step is collecting the stories of LGBT athletes, coaches and allies who can shed light on the challenges and barriers homophobia and transphobia present.

Here is the link to the survey: www.glad.org/sports

We are aiming to reach as many LGBT athletes and coaches as possible to provide the necessary support and legal remedies.

Very best,
Jamal Brown

NYC ANTI-VIOLENCE PROJECT

Many of you are aware of the recent increase in violence against the LGBT community in NYC, like this situation:

http://www.towleroad.com/2009/09/man-gay-bashed-in-nyc-claims-nypd-negligent-in-response.html

The scariest part of the incident described in that article is that it occurred in Hell's Kitchen - where a lot of us live!  It could easily have been me or any one of my NYC friends.

Supporting the NYC Anti-Violence Project is as important as ever!  I hope you'll consider coming to the Courage Awards on Monday, November 9th.  This year, AVP is honoring Pulitzer prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner (Angels in America), the lawfirm Clifford Chance US LLP and the Weblogs Pam’s House Blend, The Bilerico Project, Joe.My.God. and Towleroad.

It should be a really great night, and a bit different from previous years.  First, and maybe most importantly in our current economic times, it's cheaper!  Second, we won't have a sit down dinner, but instead will be doing a chef's tasting featuring some great NYC chefs!

Please buy a ticket here:  http://www.avp.org/events.htm

Another way to help out is to forward this email around to your friends, and to consider if your employer would sponsor AVP in any way.

For those of you who can't attend, please consider making a donation (any amount will help) at:

Thank you.
