CELEBRATES 30 YEARS OF MUSIC MAKING!

Dear Athletes & Supporters,

The Lesbian & Gay Big Apple Corps invites you to join us in celebration of 30 years of music making! We've come a long way since our founding in 1979, and we hope to showcase our achievements for you at our fall concert, Generations: A 30-Year Celebration.

Our celebration begins at 8pm on Saturday, November 14th at Peter Norton Symphony Space, located at 2537 Broadway at 95th Street. Featured on the program will be Respighi's The Pines of Rome and Shostakovich's Festive Overture, as well as such familiar musical favorites as selections from La Cage Aux Folles (Jerry Herman), Over the Rainbow (Harold Arlen), and The Thunderer (John Philip Sousa). Also heard will be the "Bacchanale" from Saint-Saens' Samson and Delilah and music from the film Saturday Night Fever. Highlighting this festive evening will be the world premiere of Allegro Scherzando: A Celebration for Piano and Concert Band, composed by James Adler, with Mr. Adler as guest soloist. The party is from 6pm-8pm on West 14th Street in Manhattan. Come meet BAC Artistic Directors Brian Worsdale and Marita Begley as well as this season's guest soloist James Adler at a wine and hors d'oeuvres reception. SURVEY: Homophobia and Transphobia in Sports

Dear Athletes,

GLAD, the New England-wide legal organization that won marriage cases in Mass. and Connecticut and is now suing to overturn DOMA, is setting its sights on challenging homophobia and transphobia in sports. To determine how it can best do that, GLAD is researching the ways in which anti-gay and anti-transgender attitudes affect LGBT athletes and coaches. Its first step is collecting the stories of LGBT athletes, coaches and allies who can shed light on the challenges and barriers homophobia and transphobia present.

Here is the link to the survey: www.glad.org/sports

We are aiming to reach as many LGBT athletes and coaches as possible to provide the necessary support and legal remedies.

Very best,
Jamal Brown
GLAD

CHEER NEW YORK UPDATE ON ANDREW JONAS

Cheer New York regrets to inform the New York GLBT athletic community of the passing of its founding director, Andrew Jonas, on September 27. Those who knew Andrew will remember him for his spirited personality, fierce devotion to the gay community and love of gymnastics and cheerleading. Andrew's drive and passion helped lead the team to a triumphant and exhilarating showing at the 2006 Gay Games in Chicago, IL. Cheer New York is forever grateful for all the hard work and dedication he gave to the squad.

His mother decided not to have a service, as was his expressed wishes. Andrew also asked that in lieu of flowers or service, donations be made in his name to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. To that end, Cheer New York has established a fundraising page, where donations can be made in his memory. It can be found here: www.mystjudeheroes.org/CheerNY.

Donations may also be made via PayPal at the Cheer NY website (http://www.cheerny.org/donations.htm). Please make a note on the CNY website that your donation is in  remembrance of Andrew.

More information on Andrew and the team's efforts to remember him can be found at Cheer New York's blog and at the team's Facebook page.

 METRO WRESTLING HALLOWEEN HOEDOWN!

NYC ANTI-VIOLENCE PROJECT

Many of you are aware of the recent increase in violence against the LGBT community in NYC, like this situation:

http://www.towleroad.com/2009/09/man-gay-bashed-in-nyc-claims-nypd-negligent-in-response.html

The scariest part of the incident described in that article is that it occurred in Hell's Kitchen - where a lot of us live!  It could easily have been me or any one of my NYC friends.

Supporting the NYC Anti-Violence Project is as important as ever!  I hope you'll consider coming to the Courage Awards on Monday, November 9th.  This year, AVP is honoring Pulitzer prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner (Angels in America), the lawfirm Clifford Chance US LLP and the Weblogs Pam’s House Blend, The Bilerico Project, Joe.My.God. and Towleroad.

It should be a really great night, and a bit different from previous years.  First, and maybe most importantly in our current economic times, it's cheaper!  Second, we won't have a sit down dinner, but instead will be doing a chef's tasting featuring some great NYC chefs!

Please buy a ticket here:  http://www.avp.org/events.htm

Another way to help out is to forward this email around to your friends, and to consider if your employer would sponsor AVP in any way.

For those of you who can't attend, please consider making a donation (any amount will help) at:

Thank you.
