Dear Athletes,
My name is Jeff Sheng and I am a photographer and activist, and also educator (I teach as a visiting professor/lecturer at the University of California, Santa Barbara) -- and for the last five years, I have been working on a photography project called "Fearless" about high school and college students who play sports on their school's sports teams and are openly gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender. The project can be seen at www.FearlessCampusTour.org ... the impetus for this project is that about ten years ago in high school, I was a closeted Varsity athlete and this is both an activist inspired project and also my first major photography book (I studied photography in school and it is now what I now teach in college).
Anyway, so the reasons for my e-mail is that I am hoping to wrap up this project into a large scale photography book by 2009, and currently, I am looking for as many and as diverse group of athletes that I can find. I have currently already photographed over 55 athletes, and my goal is to have over 100 for the eventual book publication.
The only requirements that I have are that you are an "out" high school or college athlete on your actual schools sports team (JV or Varsity) -- if you have recently graduated within one or two years, that is fine as well, as long as you actually played on your schools teams (the project is more about locating and finding athletes who played on their school's predominantly straight teams -- so I apologize to those of you who are incredibly active in your LGBT sports leagues which i also know are incredibly competitive and deserve recognition, as I currently now play in one).
There is no cost to the athlete, and I will arrange all the other logistics in getting to your area to get the photo shoot done. Also, I don't pick and choose who to photograph based on looks etc (I basically photograph and include everyone who volunteers for the project and those that I can get to photographing based on my own time and money restraints).
Please let me know if you have any questions at jeffsheng@jeffsheng.com. You can also visit my other website, www.jeffsheng.com -- which has more work of mine, including my piece/tribute to Matthew Shepard through a photograph from Laramie, Wyoming.
Also, please feel free to forward this message to anyone you think would be interested in knowing about my work.
All my best,
Jeff

Bored with the gym? Miss the intensity of the playing field? The fast paced action of competitive sports? Have we got great news for you!
A new men's lacrosse league has begun in New York and it presents a great opportunity for us to finally put together a gay-friendly lacrosse team.
University Lacrosse (http://www.ulax.org) provides an organized setting, full field facilities, weekly games, and a championship tournament following the regular season. We're hoping to field a full team of 25-30 guys of any skill level for the upcoming Fall season. Registration starts in September so we need to get a move on!
If you or anyone you know thats gay, straight, or just curious (about lacrosse!) and has an interest in playing, contact Tom Parker at nyparker06@gmail.com as soon as possible! Should we get enough of a response, we'll hold a meeting on Thursday, July 31st to hammer out the details. Looking forward to a great Fall season!
