Asbury Park Volleyball
|
Summer 2008
|
Yes, the summer is almost here and we have some important Volleyball and
non-volleyball events coming up that we wanted to share with our fans.
SATURDAY, JULY 5th & SUNDAY, JULY 6th
As I had informed everyone a week or two ago, Great American Volleyball will
be hosting their weekend tournament in Asbury Park so most of the beach will
also be occupied by registered players. We will attempt to setup a court or
two in whatever open space is available for open play if permitted starting
at 10am...Just look for the regular crowd near the 5th avenue
beach...However, many of the regular crowd will be participating in the
tournament itself, especially on Sunday.
JULY 12 FRIENDSHIP TOURNAMENT
Don't forget to sign up, there are only a few spaces left for you to bring
your team to practice for the Fire Island tourney and our own Beach Open. We
will be playing 2's in the morning and 4's in the afternoon. You can
register on the site or email us back. The cost of the tourney is $20 for a
team of 4 and will cover you for the full day if you want to play 2's and
then 4's. Go to www.apvolleyball.org to register and
www.apvolleyball.org/5065/registered_teams.html to see who your competition
will be.
APVB BEACH OPEN REGISTRATION
The registration for the Beach Open (Aug 2-3) is now open. Please go to
www.APvolleyball.org and click on the Beach Open tab... you will find all of
the information you need to register. This will be our biggest tournament
ever....

Front Runners New York 27th Annual GLBT Pride Run Wrap-up
|
|
NEW YORK CITY - New York Road Runners and Front Runners New York- the city's premier running club for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and straight allies - teamed up for the 27th time to produce the annual Pride Run, a five-mile race in Central Park, on Saturday, June 28th, 2008. This year's Pride Run was the largest on record with more than 3,100 finishers vying for more than $5,000 in cash and prizes. Front Runners New York has attracted both local and national sponsors including its premier sponsor, Continental Airlines, as well as New Balance, Crunch Gym, Urban Athletics and Gym Bar.
New York State Senator Thomas K. Duane was on hand to sound the horn at the start of the race and stated the following during his remarks, "Front Runners New York offers athletes of all shapes and sizes a safe place to be who they are. And this race represents the best that New York City has to offer--where everyone can celebrate diversity in a very visible way. Each of us here today--gay or straight, old or young, black or white--has come together to send a very clear message that we are all created equal--and that discrimination of any kind doesn't have to be tolerated. This is what I stand for each and every day as a Senator in Albany. And I am glad you have taken a stand as well by running this race today."
Additionally, the cast of Broadway's hit show Mamma Mia sang a crowd pleasing rendition of the national anthem prior to the start of the race.
The race was covered by WNBC channel 4 in New York, and raw footage can be found at http://video.wnbc.com/player/?id=270478.
Front Runners is New York's largest gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender running club with nearly 500 active members in all 5 boroughs, Long Island and New Jersey. Founded in 1979, Front Runners New York is affiliated with more than 100 clubs internationally that were inspired by Patricia Nell Warren's novel The Front Runner. For more information, or to join us on a run, visit www.frny.org.
