“A poetic pianist who has a gift for inventive—and glamorous—programming”
The New Yorker

New York, NY, May 18, 2010 – The French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF), New York’s premiere French cultural center, welcomes acclaimed pianist Bruce Levingston for two performances of Impression de la Vie, a sumptuous evening of French music inspired by the scintillating sights and sounds of the natural world. The performances will take place on June 2 and 3 at 8pm in FIAF’s Florence Gould Hall, and will also feature guest artists Eric Jacobsen on cello and Kimball Gallagher on piano.

The program for Impression de la Vie offers a comprehensive musical exploration of nature’s sensual allure, with a selection of pieces ranging from Debussy’s impressions of the luminosity of water and sea life to Messaien’s majestic exaltations of birdsong. The concert will also include the premiere of contemporary composer Philippe Manoury’s Spins, inspired by the restless and whirling movements of the wind.

Levingston has firmly established himself as one of the most important figures in contemporary music, recognized not only for his skills in performance but also as the founder and artistic director of the Premiere Commission. The non-profit Commission is devoted to financing the composition and performance of new works by composers of today such as Philip Glass, Chen Yi, and Milton Babbit, its mission reflecting Levingston’s own passion for contemporary music. Levingston’s talent and dedication to continued artistic creation have led him to collaborate with a number of these and other artists from a variety of disciplines, including actor Ethan Hawke, painter Chuck Close, and author Michael Cunningham.

With Impression de la Vie, Levingston employs his gift for creative programming to weave a musically diverse yet cohesive narrative underscoring the powerful history of nature’s influence on France’s most celebrated composers. The pianist’s thoughtful selection of pieces by brilliant contemporaries Gabriel Fauré and Camille Saint-Saëns, impressionist icons Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel, and the innovative Olivier Messiaen highlights the historic tradition that unites these towering figures—a tradition that, as Levingston establishes with the premiere of Manoury’s Spins, continues into the present day.
