  CREW NEW YORK IS BACK!!

Crew New York is back on the radar, connecting gay and lesbian rowers in the New York and New Jersey area.

Gay and lesbian rowers, coxies, coaches, and race officials, active or inactive, now have a way to connect with each other on  the new Gay + Lesbian Rowing Federation social network, Network Now!   Launched last fall, the network offers individual rowers an opportunity to connect with each other.  Since Manhattan area rowers belong to a variety of clubs in New Jersey, Manhattan, and Long Island, the Crew New York group offers a unique way to bring rowers together, to plan social events, form squads for regattas, or form a boat for regular practice.

GOTHAM VOLLEYBALL UPDATE

Starting in Spring 2010, Gotham Volleyball will be starting a new system to certify, keep track of, and better acknowledge our many dedicated members who serve as volunteer coaches on League teams.  The best part is that if you sign up to coach, you will be able to participate in a totally free coaching clinic, with instructional lessons and live drills.  Details below, but the bottom line is, to sign up, e-mail Gotham Coaching Coordinator Alan Kramer at coaching@gothamvolleyball.org indicating your current level of Gotham play and the level at which you want to coach.

What is new?
Gotham will be providing a training clinic for all volunteer coaches who sign up through the League.  This free, three-hour clinic will be held for all members who are interested in serving as coaches.  The only requirement to attend is a commitment that you will coach a level-appropriate team.  For Spring 2010, the Clinic will be held on January 23, 2010 at 9:00 AM.  Please contact Alan Kramer at coaching@gothamvolleyball.org to reserve a spot.

We also will be keeping track of all coaches for all teams, and provide a thank you at the end of the season for all who have given their time as a coach.  Captains should let us know who coaches their team by e-mailing coaching@gothamvolleyball.org.

Finally, we will be introducing the position of “Mentor Coaches”.  Mentor Coaches will be experienced Gotham players designated by the Gotham coaching committee to be paired with each Divisions 9 team to assist the team’s certified coach with drills, help make sure that there is a good team spirit, teach Gotham traditions to new members, and make sure that the teams are having a great experience.

Who can be a coach?
Captains remain free to choose coaches of their choice.  However, the League strongly recommends that teams use coaches who meet the following guidelines:

1)    The coach should attend the coaching clinic or have recent experience in the Gotham Power program and;
2)    The coach should have played in a division that is at least 2 levels higher than the one being coached.

If coaches do not meet these criteria, but the captain still wants the person to serve as a coach, we ask that the team captain contact Alan Kramer at coaching@gothamvolleyball.org.

How are coaches assigned?
As always, it is up to the captain to who coaches his/her team.  If a captain does not have a coach in mind, we will recommend coaches who have indicated an interest in coaching at the level and meet the League guidelines.  Contact coaching@gothamvolleyball.org if you are a captain who needs a coach.

Even if captains get a coach on their own, we encourage all captains to choose certified coaches who fit within the above-listed criteria.  We also ask that, other than mentor coaches, captains have only one person coach their team, so that coaches are available to all.  Finally, we ask that all captains provide the name of their coaches to coaching@gothamvolleyball.org so that the coaches can be recognized.

Special thanks go to the members who have agreed to take on the taks of improving the coaching system -- the Gotham Coaching Committee of Alan Kramer, Rich Reid, Tim McNamara, and John Rappaport.

The mission of Gotham Volleyball is to improve the quality of life for GLBTQ individuals by building community through the sport of volleyball.

  CO-ED SOFTBALL ON LONG ISLAND

The Long Island Pride Sports Association, Inc. is proud to announce the 13th season of the Lavender League.  The Lavender League is Long Island’s only co-ed softball league serving the GLBT communities of both Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

The mission of the LIPSA Softball program is to provide a fun, safe and friendly atmosphere for the extended gay and lesbian community, including their friends and family, to enjoy the social and health benefits of an organized sport, as well as for the continuing development of softball skills for athletes of all kinds.  All ages (18+) and skill levels are welcomed and encouraged.

Teams are forming and players of all ability levels are needed.  Everyone will have an opportunity to play in the league which is good naturedly competitive.  Practice begins in April, and games begin in May.

We are also actively searching for team sponsors.  Many local businesses and community organizations have been proud supporters of LIPSA softball teams in recent years, and as the league grows this season, we have the need for additional sponsors.

For additional information and to find a team near you, contact LIPSA softball coordinators Ryan Lucas or Tami Francis by phone at (631)559-4865 or by email at lipsasoftball@yahoo.com

OUT OF BOUNDS NYC IS LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEER
FOR THE ORIGINAL GLBT EXPO • MARCH 20-21, 2010

The Original GLBT Expo (www.originalglbtexpo.com) is coming up very soon and we're proud to announce that Out of Bounds & the Team New York Committee have a booth again this year.  We are looking for volunteers to staff our booth and help us promote Out of Bounds and Team New York and the many GLBT sports and recreation organizations to the hundreds and hundreds of people who will wander by.
The Expo will be at the Jacob Javits Center (37th Street & 11th Avenue in Manhattan) on Saturday, March 20th and Sunday, March 21st.

As a volunteer, your job will be to greet these people -- encourage them to take some of the postcards and flyers which we will provide on the various GLBT sports and recreation groups.  And most important, you will be asking them to sign-up for our mailing list!  That's easy!  And no prior booth experience is necessary :)   If you represent a sports & recreation organization and you don't have a booth of your own this year, be our guests and promote your group at the Out of Bounds & the Team New York booth!

We are now setting up the volunteer schedule for the Expo and asking anyone interested to take ONE shift.  Only 2 hours of your time.  Nice and easy.  You may invite a friend to join you on your shift, which would help a lot -- the goal is to have at least two people at all times (so one can explore the Expo, go for food, drinks, bathroom, etc.)

And as a booth volunteer, you'll get free entry into the Expo, and you can wander around either before or after your shift!

Here are the shift slots:
Saturday, March 20, 2009
11am-1pm  (2 people)
1pm-3pm (2 people)
3pm-5pm (2 people)
5pm-7pm (2 people)

Sunday, March 21, 2009
12pm-2pm (2 people)
2pm-4pm (2 people)
4pm-6pm (2 people)

Please reply ASAP and claim your shift.  I'll confirm with you if it is available.  Please provide an alternate choice, just in case the first isn't available.

Thanks in advance!
